On Thursday 14th May, 1987, I was on duty in company with Detective
Sergeants AYRES and KNOX and other officers, As a result of what
I was told I went to Lees Place, Wl, junction with Park Street,
Wl. I had an unobstructed view of the front entrance to 93 Park
Street, Wl, the premises of the Cyprus Embassy.
[Undisclosed material]
At 11.30 am I saw a blue Mercedes motor vehicle index NLW 160V
draw up outside the Embassy building on the same side of the road.
I then saw a man who I now know to be Panos KOUPPARIS getting
out of the front nearside passenger seat of the vehicle, He was
wearing a black trilby hat (Exhibit NP/678) dark glasses (Exhibit
NP/679) grey raincoat (Exhibit GM/1). He was wearing a black glove
(Exhibit NP/687) on his left hand in which he was holding several
magazines. He then walked into the Embassy building.
[Undisclosed material]
At 11.40 am KOUPPARIS came out I of the building and turned towards
the vehicle. I then approached him together with Detective Sergeant
AYRES, we introduced ourselves and I said "I am arresting you
for demanding money with menaces". I then cautioned KOUPPARIS
and he said "Alright alright whats this all about". I said "You
will be taken to Paddington Green Police Station where the full
facts will be explained". He was then handcuffed and placed in
a police vehicle in which I accompanied him to Paddington Green
Police Station.
[Undisclosed material]
At the time of his arrest KOUPPARIS was carrying in his left hand
a large brown envelope containing packets of money (Exhibit NP/668).
The envelope had been opened. He was also carrying a Filofax
book (Exhibit NP/674) and some magazines. At the scene I was handed
a brown briefcase (Exhibit NP/669) by Detective Sergeant KNOX
which I conveyed to Paddington Green Police Station.
[Undisclosed material]
At the station I asked KOUPPARIS to remove his raincoat and to
empty his pockets onto the station table. I then searched the
overcoat and In the outside right pocket I found a packet of money
containing a Bank of England ten pound note serial No: AW56 874353
(Exhibit NP/666). In the left inside wallet pocket of the coat
I found another packet of money containing a Bank of England ten
pound note serial No: BR06 414822 (Exhbit NP/667). I then checked
the contents of the brown envelope and found eight (8) packets
of money (Exhibit NP/668) each containing a Bank of England ten
pound note bearing serial numbers as follows:-
AZ43 889721
AZ56 594019
BNO6 924544
BN19 455539
AX84 084282
AX76 870698
AX25 700748
AY31 090762
I then placed the overcoat in a bag bearing exhibit label marked
GM/1 signed by me , which I produce as my exhibit. At the station
I placed the brown briefcase (Exhibit NP/669) on the station table
in front of KOUPPARIS. The case had combination locks on. I then
tried the right hand lock and it opened. I saw that the combination
was set at 666. KOUPPARIS then turned the case towards himself
and after setting the combination he opened the left hand lock.
The lock was set at 999. This case together with the other pro-
perty I handed to Detective Constable Pratt.
