Ref: A00-300995 Case No. 871626 Macpherson II
Volume I, Pages 1-5, Thursday 8th June, 1989
(In the presence of the jury)
MR. TEMPLE: My first witness is Mrs. Moore.
MR. JUSTICE MACPHERSON: Is there any contest about Mrs. Moore?
MR. BECKMAN: Might I ask your Lordship - I will make it clear
myself by asking my learned friend to lead. Would your
Lordship rely on my discretion?
MR. JUSTICE MACPHERSON: I will rely on that but I will sometimes
ask, otherwise we do find, from experience, getting involved
in evidence which is unnecessary.
MR. BECKMAN: I have spoken to Mr. Temple, my Lord, so we have
this extremely well organised, and if your Lordship will
leave it to us we can proceed with great speed.
FLORENCE ELAINE MOORE: Sworn
Examined by Mr. Temple
Q. Is your name Florence Elaine Moore? A. Yes.
Q. Are you currently a director of a company called Moore
Printcraft? A. Yes.
Q. Tell the Court about Moore Printcraft; where are the
premises? A. In Grove Vale, East Dulwich.
Q. What type of work does the company undertake? A. Printing.
Q. Does that include photocopying? A. Yes.
Q. And selling items of stationery? A. Yes, that type of
thing.
MR. BECKMAN: My learned friend can lead this witness because
(inaudible).
MR. TEMPLE: Is it very much a family firm? A. Yes.
Q. One of the directors in the autumn of 1987 was a Miss Holmes?
A. Yes.
Q. I want to ask you about a particular day in late March 1987.
Do you remember two persons coming into the shop? A. Yes.
Q. Both men, and one of them I think you describe as being
Cypriot looking? A. Yes.
MR. TEMPLE: I understand from my learned friend that there is no
dispute other than that is a reference to Mr. Koupparis.
MR. JUSTICE MACPHERSON: Ladies and gentlemen, from time to
time ---
MR. BECKMAN: My Lord, I was very careful the way I put the
matter; my learned friend's recollection has failed him
slightly. May we leave that and carry on with the evidence
as per the statement?
MR. JUSTICE MACPHERSON: The first was Cypriot looking? A. Yes.
MR. TEMPLE: I want to ask you about his description: build?
A. Slim build.
Q. Colour of his hair? A. Dark.
Q. Length? A. Shoulder length.
Q. When you say "shoulder length", down to his shoulders?
A. No, not too long.
Q. Was it about your length? A. Just about below the ears,
what I can remember.
Q. Age group? A. About 35, 38.
Q. And his height? A. About 5 foot 8.
Q. Perhaps we can call him "Man No. 1", and still concentrating
on man No. 1, was he carrying anything, and if so, what?
A. Yes, a briefcase.
Q. You told us there was another man with him. We can take
his description quite shortly. What nationality did you
think he was? A. English.
Q. Age group? A. About 38, I would say, 35.
Q. I need not trouble you any further about his description.
What did the two men want? A. Photocopying.
Q. Who was it who actually did the initial speaking?
A. No. 2.
Q. How many sheets did they want copying? A. Eleven.
Q. Were you given the sheets which they wanted to be copied?
A. No.
Q. What happened about that? A. No. 2 held them and gave
them to me one by one - well, put them on the photocopier.
Q. Were you able to see what was written on the sheets?
A. Yes, I did see they were numbered.
Q. Numbered where? A. At the bottom.
Q. Apart from seeing the numbering on the bottom of the sheets,
could you see anything else about them, any other detail?
A. Little pieces of board protruding over the sides of the
paper.
MR. JUSTICE MACPHERSON: Pieces of what? A. Little pieces of
card.
MR. TEMPLE: Were you initially able to copy successfully?
A. I did three and man No. 2 said they were not all coming
out properly because it is an A4 machine and these little
bits of card were over - you know, over the top.
MR. JUSTICE MACPHERSON: They were not fitting properly? A. No.
MR. TEMPLE: The initial copies were no good? A. No good, so I
screwed them up, put them on top of the photocopier and he
picked them up and said, "I'll get rid of them for you",
because I did complain I would get in trouble, keep wasting
the copies.
Q. Who was it who said he would get rid of them for you?
A. No. 2.
Q. What did he do with them? A. Put them in his pocket.
Q. I am summarising matters: eventually did you get the photo-
copying right? A. Yes.
Q. Did you make the eleven copies which had been asked for?
A. The gentleman No. 2 put them one by one on the
photocopier and I pressed the button.
Q. After the copying was complete, first of all, what happened
to the copies? A. Then he took them over to man No. 1 to
put in his briefcase.
Q. Did he do so? A. He put them in alternate, photocopy and
the original, put them together.
Q. At the end of the photocopying exercise the copies and
originals had gone into No. 1's briefcase? A. Yes.
Q. The nationality of No. 1 was Cypriot in your estimation?
A. Yes.
Q. Did they then leave the shop? A. Yes.
Q. And you have not seen them since? A. No.
MR. BECKMAN: No questions, my Lord.
(The witness withdrew)
(The court was adjourned for a short time)
