| 3 About the beginning of April one evening I had been to Stallions Night Club, Charing Cross Road with Barney KINDERSLEY, Charlotte KRIPS and Jake CLENNELL. |
2 One evening at the beginning of April 1987 I think a Tuesday I had been to a night club called Stalions, Charing Cross Road, with Barney KINDERSLEY, Charlotte KRIPS and Sophy THOMPSON. |
2 I can't remember the date but one Saturday in March I had been to Stallions Night Club in the West End of London together with Barnabas KINDERSLEY, Jake CLENNEL and Sofie THOMPSON. |
2 At the end of March or the beginning of April this year I was in Shaftesbury Avenue W1 with my friends - Jake CLENNEL, Sofie THOMPSON and Charllotte CRIPPS. |
| 4 On leaving the club we walked along Charing Cross Road and saw a man looking in a Computer Shop window. |
3 On leaving the club in the early hours of the morning we were walking along Charing Cross Road when we saw a man looking in a Computer Shop window. |
3 We were walking in the main road by Leicester Square tube station when I saw Barny and Jake talking to a man Sofie and I walked up and I started talking to the man as well. |
3 It was about 3 am and we noticed a man looking in a computer shop. |
| 5 One of the boy said to this man "You can get radiation poisoning from looking at those" or something like that. |
5 For a joke I think I said "You will get radiation if you keep looking at those computers". 6 He in turn spoke to us and we started a conversation. |
|
4 Jake or me said words to the effect "Don't look in there too long, you could die of radiation poisoning". 5 The man asked if we had a spare cigarette and we said "No". 6 We walked slowly away and joined us [sic]. |
| 6 The man who I would describe as aged about 35/40 years, 5'6" in height, Greek appearance dark coloured hair, balding, clean shaven with a London/Greek accent. 7 I can't recall what he was wearing. 8 He had long fingernails. 61 His normal dress was a suit, trilby hat, sunglasses or smart casual wear. |
4 I would describe this man as aged about 35 years, 5'6" in height, dark hair balding, medium build, brown eyes, clean shaven, wearing dark glasses and sporty leisure wear. 34 On occasions when we met him he would be wearing dark suits, dark coloured trilby hat, sunglasses, black leather shoes... |
77 I would describe Nemo as about 35 years, small in height about 5'4". 78 He wore dark glasses a lot and Burton Clothing. 79 He had black hair and a chubby face and was a tanned Cypriot colour. |
72 I would describe Nemo (Panos) as about 5'8" tall, medium build, he has a large nose, Greek complexion and a round face. 73 He had very dark hair which was very thin on top. 74 A lot of the time he wore dark glasses and once or twice he wore a trilby hat. |
| |
...and for some reason a black leather glove on his left hand. |
11 I noticed that he wore a black leather glove on his right hand that night and every other time I saw him. |
|
| 9 This man spoke to us but I didn't take a lot of interest. 10 After speaking to him for a few minutes, he invited us back to his hotel, which we accepted. |
7 [He introduced himself as Captain Nemo] and that he was staying in London at the White House Hotel. 8 He asked various questions regarding the night life in London. 9 During the course of conversation he invited us back to his hotel for drinks. |
4 He told us he was staying at the White House Hotel. 5 Jokingly we said "You can take us there for a drink". |
7 He asked if we would like to go back to his hotel for a drink. |
| 11 We travelled to the hotel by car. |
10 We accepted his invitation and travelled to the hotel by cab. |
6 He said "OK" and stopped a taxi. |
8 We agreed and we all got into a taxi. 9 We then went to the White House Hotel which is near Great Portland Street. |
| |
13 He also had a white box type machine which made sounds of a dog barking and the sound of your own voice. 14 The machine had a piece which fitted over the mouthpiece of a telephone. 39 I would like to add that the white box type machine which the man had, which I believe is a frequency shifter could make your voice sound higher or lower depending which way you turned the dial. |
7 Before we got into the taxi he showed us a contraption which made a noise like a dog barking. |
|
| 12 At the hotel we had drinks in the reception area. |
11 At the hotel we had drinks and sandwiches in the coffee lounge. |
8 When we got to the hotel we had to sit in a lounge area as the security officer would not let us go to his room. 9 He brought us some drinks and sandwiches and showed us a lot of money. |
12 At the hotel we were about to go to his room when a member of the hotel staff stopped us and we had to sit in the lounge area. 13 NEMO ordered some sandwiches and drinks for us. |
| 15 Prior to leaving for this drive he told us that his name was Nemo and we were to call him Commander Nemo but this changed later to Captain Nemo. |
7 He introduced himself as Captain Nemo... 12 We asked what his occupation was but he would not give us a direct answer. |
10 I asked him what his name was and he said "Call me Commander Nemo". 12 I asked him what he did and he said he couldn't tell us because it was very secretive and that he had diplomatic privilege. |
10 I'm not sure if we were in the taxi or had arrived at the hotel when one of us asked him his name and he said it was Commander NEMO. 11 I thought it was odd but didn't say anything. |
| 13 Later we went for a drive with him, I am not sure where we went, in fact I fell asleep in the back of the car. 14 I woke up again once we were back at the hotel. |
15 After having drinks at the hotel we all went for a drive around South West London in his red Ford Sierra motor vehicle which appeared to be a hired car. 16 During the course of driving around I fell asleep in the back of the car only to wake up back at the hotel. |
13 He then wanted to go for a drive and we all went with him. 14 I was sitting in the front and the others were asleep in the back. |
14 After we had finished the food and drinks he asked if we would like to have a drive around London. 15 We agreed we would and he drove us around in a red Sierra. |
| 16 That morning Jake and I had breakfast with him. 17 Barney and Charlotte had been dropped off earlier. 19 After breakfast he drove Jake and I home. |
17 I was told by Sophie that Barney and Charlotte had been dropped off early at their home. 18 Sophie and I had breakfast with this Mr Nemo then he drove us home. |
15 After driving around for a while he dropped me off at Barny's house with Barny. |
16 He later dropped Charlotte and me at my house and Jake and Sofie at theirs. |
| 18 During breakfast Nemo spoke about his idea to find an island and build on it and turn it into a manmade paradise. |
|
|
|
| 20 After that we saw him almost every night, he would meet us near Covent Garden then take us to Restaurants and Clubs. |
19 Over the next two or three weeks we met this Mr Nemo on a number of occasions. 20 We would meet him at either the White House Hotel or the Intercontinental Hotel. 21 He would then take us to Restaurants for meals or Night Clubs. 37 Each time we went out with this man he would always pay for the meals or drinks, always paid cash, normally with £50 notes. 38 The venue we frequented most was Brown's Night Club/Restaurant just off Long Acre. |
|
|
| 22 On our third or fourth meeting we arranged to meet him at the White House Hotel. 23 I'm not sure what had happened but there had been some trouble at the hotel. 24 He put quite a lot of Burton named bags in his car and on that occasion we drove away from the hotel very quickly and went to a night club. |
28 One evening, I think out third meeting, we arranged to meet him at the White House Hotel. 29 As we waited in the lobby I noticed the Management arrive with a trolley loaded with Burton's bags which appeared to contain clothes and Mr NEMO was being asked to leave the hotel. |
16 I can't remember exactly which day it was but I went to the White House Hotel with Barny, Jake and Sofie again and saw Nemo. 17 He told us he had been asked to leave the hotel. 18 His bags were loaded into his car and we went somewhere with him, I can't remember where. |
17 Later that day I was at Jake's house and Nemo either phoned while I was there or had phoned earlier, but anyway, he wanted to see us. 18 So all four of us went over to the White House Hotel by taxi. 20 When we arrived I saw a porter putting a lot of plastic bags with 'Burtons' on into his car. 21 He was paying his bill and afterwards we got into his car. 22 He then told us he had been asked to leave the hotel because of a dispute. |
| |
|
|
[19 I should say at this point out that Nemo had told Jake on the telephone that when we got to the White House Hotel we should ask for Mr Edwards.] |
| |
|
19 One day, we met him at the Inter Continental Hotel and he took us to 'Good earth' Chinese Restaurant in Knightsbridge. 20 He paid for it in cash. 21 It was very expensive. |
23 We then all went to a chinese restaurant in Knightsbridge for a meal, which he paid for. |
| [21 After a couple of meetings he started talking about making the four of us into a 'Pop Group'.] |
23 As we got to know him he stated that he wanted to make us into a 'Pop Group' and that we would be rich. |
|
24 He told us that he had a number of ideas which he had for us including forming a band and some other ideas of his, none of which we took seriously. |
| |
|
22 After the meal we went to Heaven Night Club. |
25 After the meal we eventually finished up at a night club called 'Heaven'. |
| 25 As we were in his car on this occasion he mentioned that he had some pills which would keep you awake. 26 These pills were small in size and round. 27 He didn't say what they were. |
|
|
|
| 28 He didn't stay very long at the club but on leaving he gave the others £100. 29 I left with this man and he drove me home. |
|
23 After a while Nemo said he was tired and wanted to leave and he gave us £150 to enjoy ourselves as he felt guilty leaving us. |
26 A little later Nemo said he was tired and gave us three (3) £50 notes to stay and have a good time. 27 Jake, Charlotte and I stayed in the club and he and Sofie left. 28 We stayed at the club for a while longer and then went home. |
| 30 Over the next two or three nights we met this man again normally in Covent Garden and we went to Browns Night Club. On one occasion we met two of his friends. 32 He said that they were young rich boys who had inherited their money. 33 I would describe these two as 'A' aged early twenties, 5'10"-11" in height, Greek appearance, dark coloured hair, clean shaven, wearing a well dressed suit. 34 'B' aged about the same maybe a bit younger, as he sat down all the time, I'm not sure of his height, wimpish face, dark hair, Greek appearance, clean shaven, wearing I think a suit. 35 I took no notice of these two men. 36 Also I think one was a fashion retailer. |
22 He introduced us to a number of people, at first they were introduced as friends but later some of these people were introduced as relatives. |
24 I'm not sure if it was a day later or two days later but I saw him again. 25 I was with Jake and Barny and another girl. 26 We went to the Inter Continental Hotel because he wanted us to meet some of this friends. 27 He took us to another hotel. 28 I can't remember its name. 29 I remember meeting Jason and Andre. 30 He told me they were just friends of his. 31 He said Jason was at college and Andre was a Burtons retail salesman. 32 They referred to Nemo as Pan, when ever we called him Commander Nemo they laughed. 33 There was two other men there who appeared to be very rich. 34 They said they were clothes designers for Top Shop, Chelsea Girl and shops like that. 35 Nemo said it was good for us to meet them as they could design our clothes when we became a 'Pop group'. 36 We all then went to Browns Club which is near Holborn Station. 37 I overheard Nemo talking to the two clothes designers. 38 I heard mention of machine guns and that they had heard Nemo was short of money.
39 Jason took some photographs of us all. 40 At about four in the morning Barny and I was dropped off at Barny's house by Jason and Andre. 41 I do remember that Jason and Andre kept saying they were friends of Nemos and that he was honest and straight. |
29 The following day Jake told me Nemo had phoned and we were to meet him in Covent Garden. 30 We, thats Jake, Charlotte, a girl named Katie and me, met up with Nemo and he drove us to the Inter-Continental Hotel where he'd booked in. 31 We went into the bar and we were introduced to a number of people. 32 One was a young man named Jason who was about eighteen, Nemo said he was a friend who was at the Imperial College and another who was a Burtons Salesman in the Brixton Store. 33 There was also two other men in the company. 34 They were in their late twenties and really 'flashy' in their dress. 35 At this time we still referred to 'Nemo' as 'NEMO'. 36 At one stage he and Jake went to make a phone call and one of us asked the others what NEMO's real name was and they laughed. 37 I remember the flashy dressed men told me they were designers for C & A and Burtons and other big stores. 38 They were Greek looking and appeared to have plenty of money.
39 A little later we all went to Browns night club which is near Long Acre. 40 We stayed in the club until it closed and went home by taxi. |
| 37 This night Barney and Charlotte left for a holiday. |
|
42 Barny and I then went to Italy for a weeks holiday. |
41 Later that morning I went on holiday to Italy with Charlotte and some family friends. 42 We were away for a week... |
| 38 Whilst they were on holiday Jake and I saw this man again on one occasion. 39 On this night he spoke again about forming a band and he introduced to a man by the name of James SPARKLE, in fact he did have some form of identification with that name. 40 I would describe this man as about 25 years, 5'10" in height, Greek appearance long black hair in a pony tail which was frizzy, clean shaven, wearing casual clothes. 41 He spoke about the music business. |
|
|
|
| 42 After Barney and Charlotte returned from holiday we went out with Nemo again and again we met Mr SPARKLE. 43 On this occasion Nemo took us to SPARKLE's home in Hornsey lane, Islington where we had a sound test. 44 Nemo's wife and daughter was also there who we had met some days earlier. |
24 He also introduced us to a Greek looking man whose name was James SPARKLE. 25 I would describe this man as aged 25 years, 5'10" in height, long black curly hair, often in a pony tail, clean shaven, medium build, wearing trendy black clothes. 26 Nemo stated this man was his cousin. 27 The name SPARKLE was in the man's passport and SPARKLE was the English translation of the Greek name. |
72 I forgot to say that the time before last that we met Nemo he took us to a cousin of his named Jimmy SPARKLE. 73 He lived somewhere in Peckham. 74 We had earlier picked up a woman named Christine who was also a Cypriot. 75 At Jimmy SPARKLES we sang a song and he thought we weren't all that good. 76 Later we left and he dropped Barny and me off. |
[?-] 60 About three days later I went with Jake, Sofie and Charlotte to meet him in Covent Garden for a sound check. 61 He took us in his car together with his wife and daughter to an address in Peckham. 62 This was after was had picked up a woman who was a half-caste. 63 We went into this room and met a man named Jimmy SPARKLE. 64 We took it in turns to sing and I played the bass guitar. 65 When we left Panos took us back to Covent Garden. |
| 46 On this occasion he wanted to see our parents but they didn't turn up. |
|
|
|
| 47 Another night we met this other man who Nemo said was very important. 48 We met this man in the Churchill Hotel. 49 He had a foreign name. 50 I describe him as 45/55 years, 6' in height well built, grey hair wearing a grey suit. 51 He spoke to Nemo in a foreign tongue whilst we spoke about the band. 52 Nemo suggested that we went back to this guys flat in St. Johns Wood. 53 We went with the man in his Rolls Royce I don't know the address. 54 At the Flat we had a drink then we left. |
|
43 When we came back from holiday Jake, Barny, Sofie and I went to the Churchill Hotel to meet Nemo. 44 He told us we were to meet a millionaire who was going to back us as a pop group. 45 We met the man at the Churchill Hotel, he was a fat man who was a Cypriot. 46 He told us he was taking us to a place where we could dance and have a drink. 47 We left the hotel and us four got into a Rolls Royce motor car and Nemo followed behind in his car. 48 We were taken to some flats in St Johns Wood. 49 We went into the flats and went to the top floor. 50 I didn't like it in the flat and asked Nemo if we could go and he told me to sit quiet and wait. 51 This frightened me and I said to my friends I wanted to go for a walk as I felt sick. 52 The door was opened and we were allowed to go. 53 We ran from the flats and went home. |
51 I forgot to mention that when we got back from holiday and prior to meeting his wife, we had met him in Covent Garden and he took us to an hotel. 52 I can't remember the name of it, where we met up with two middle age Cypriot men. 53 I was introduced to them but I can't remember their names. 54 We had some drinks and we left the hotel to go, as we thought to a club. 55 When we were outside the hotel we got into the Cypriots convertible, cream Rolls Royce car and Panos followed behind in his car. 56 We were driven to an address in St Johns Wood. 57 I don't know the address but I could find it again. 58 We felt a bit uncomfortable in this mans penthouse and made excuses to leave. [59 The next time I saw Panos was at the Inter Continental as I have just described.] 75 I now remember the name of the hotel Panos took us to when we came back from holiday, it was the Churchill. |
| 45 On the day we did meet Nemo's wife, he had shown us various Credit cards, press cards which had expired. |
30 On another meeting at the Inter-Continental Hotel I was introduced to a lady as his wife and a young girl as his daughter. 31 I was also introduced to another female who I was told was his mother. 32 On this occasion he showed me various Credit Cards which had expired, a passport which also had expired and a business card for Futher [sic] Investment Ltd in the name of P KOUPPARIS. |
54 About two days later we again met Nemo at the Inter Continental Hotel. 55 He had a woman with him who he said was his wife. 56 I can't recall her name, and a small girl he said was his daughter. 57 She couldn't speak any English. 58 Also there was a coloured man who Nemo said was an old schoolfriend. 59 Nemo showed me some passports and credit cards which had expired. 60 The name on them was Panos KOUPPARIS. 61 He told us that he had called himself Nemo on the spur of the moment. |
[42 We were away for a week] and I can't remember when it was but I again met Nemo at the Inter Continental Hotel. 43 I was with Jake, Sofie and Charlotte. 44 With Nemo was his wife and a little girl, also with these was an Indian looking man whose name I can't remember. 45 His wife called Nemo 'PAN' and he told us his real name was Panos KOUPPARIS. 46 He showed us his passport and some credit cards, which were out of date. 47 He also showed us a brochure about an investment company called Futura Investments Ltd and gave me a business card (which I produce as Exhibit BGK/1). |
| |
|
62 I recall the passports were Swiss, Cypriot and English, they were all in his name and had his photograph in. |
|
| |
|
63 Then his mother came to look after the little girl and we all went to browns Club. 64 He kept saying he was going to make a million pounds a year and his wife just said yes as if just to keep him happy. |
[70 I can't remember the exact occasions but a number of times he mentioned he was going to get 9 (nine) million pounds. 71 He didn't say where it was coming from and I didn't ask.] |
| |
|
65 I noticed when she opened her purse it was full of bank notes. |
|
| |
|
66 Nemo left with his wife and the coloured man and we stayed on for a while. |
48 A little later we went to Browns Club again, the little girl had been left with her mother, who I didn't see. 49 The Indian man told me he was a photographer. 50 We left the club before closing time and went home. |
| 58 I finally found out that his name was Panos KOUPPARIS after seeing a business card. |
33 As time went on I became worried because this man would not give us direct answers to questions, until one evening when we were all in his car I asked him his real name and he said Panos KOUPPARIS. |
|
|
| 59 During the times that I saw this man he drove two or three different cars. 60 They appeared hired I don't know the makers. |
35 Apart from the red Sierra he also drove a black Granada and a chauffeur driven limosine. 36 These cars I believe were also hired. |
|
|
| 55 We didn't see him for a while until he telephoned us. 56 We met him again in Covent Garden, on this occasion he only had a small amount of money on him, about £15 so we only drove around in his car. 57 I believe this was the last time I saw him. |
|
67 The last time I saw him he said he had just got back from Cornwall. 68 He said he had taken his wife and daughter for a short holiday. 69 It was late at night and he picked us up from Jakes house. 70 There was the four of us and a boy called Ian. 71 We went to a Kentucky Fried Chicken shop in the West End and then he dropped me and Barny off at Home. |
66 We didn't see him for a long time and we met him, after he'd phoned up, at Covent Garden. 67 It was Easter Monday and he was alone. 68 I was with Jake, Sofie and Charlotte and Ian. 69 We had something to eat in the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Shaftesbury Avenue then we went home. |
| 62 I've written this statement to the best of my knowledge the facts may not be in the correct order. 63 I would also like to add that I would be able to recognise all these people that I have mentioned again. |
|
|
|
| 64 Further to my statement dated 19th May 1987. 65 On the occasions I met Panos KOUPPARIS with his wife I as well as the others, used the name NEMO when I spoke to him. 66 I cannot recall if there was any reaction from his wife to this name. |
40 Further to my statement dated 19th may 1987. 41 On the occasions that I met KOUPPARIS with his wife, when speaking to him I would use the name NEMO or on the odd occasion 'Pan'. 42 When I used the name Nemo in front of his wife, he would say Jake, "Stop using the name NEMO, call me Pan". 43 (He didn't seem aggressive when saying this). 44 There was no reaction from his wife. |
80 Further to my statement dated 19th May 1987, I met KOUPPARIS with his wife on about three occasions. 81 Every time I spoke to him I would call him by the name 'NEMO'. 82 A couple of times he looked 'odd' when I used the name but there was no noticeable reaction from his wife. |
76 Further to my statement dated 19th May 1987. 77 On the occasions I met KOUPPARIS with his wife, as I mentioned previously I would call him by the same name. 78 He told me to call him 'Pan' when in front of his wife. 79 There was no noticeable reaction from his wife. |
